art and design

In Art we aim to encourage an adventurous and enquiring approach to the study and practice of Art and Design so that the pupils can develop the skills to express their ideas and feelings in an imaginative and meaningful way.

The teaching of the various art disciplines is integrated with theory, knowledge and understanding so that pupils can begin to analyse their own work in a broader artistic context. Also, to understand the language and conventions of art and design and to understand its place in history and society. This is achieved by encouraging the pupils to explore the many different examples of art and design from all countries and cultures, both traditional and contemporary.
In years 7, 8 and 9 the teaching of Art at St. John’s is based around programs of study that follow the National Curriculum for key stage 3.

In years 10 and 11 pupils can choose to study the Art and Design GCSE and in years 12 and 13 AS and A2 level courses. The emphasis on these courses is on the individual creativity of each student.
