Drama is part of the speaking and listening strand of literacy and is used frequently in the classroom. Often acting out a story helps the children understand and remember it to a far greater degree, we also use ‘Hot Seating’ where a child pretends to actually be a character and other children ask them questions about their actions in stories they have read.
Each class takes part in an assembly once a year, where all children take part. This is a valuable experience for the children, teaching them performance skills and giving them confidence speaking in front of an audience.

Key Stage 1
The younger children take part in one main production a year; each class plays a part from EYFS to Year 2. This normally involves a story with movement and singing.
Key Stage 2
The production for the older children is mainly an after school activity, therefore it only involves the children who opt for it. Luckily it is usually the biggest club and a great many children do become part of it! Before parts are chosen, the children do a great deal of improvisation based on the story. They also do character work and voice projection.
