Saint John's International School Bangkok, Thailand
Annual Service of Remembrance, The British Embassy, Bangkok Sunday 8th November 2009
When you go home, tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow, we gave our today.
John Maxwell Edmonds, 1875-1958.
In remembrance of those who have given their lives in wartime campaigns and suffered as a result of conflict, Saint John’s attended a moving service at The British Embassy. SJIS was represented by Head Boy, Punnat Punsri and Head Girl, Amelia Miron. They were accompanied by Nick Bennett, Head of Pastoral Care.
The service began with the pipers of The British Legion as the Gurkha Guard marched past the war memorial. Reverend Peter Cook officiated and led the congregation in prayers honouring those who have suffered and died in war and prayed for peace and justice everywhere. The British Ambassador gave the reading: “The Dead” by Rupert Brooke.
The bugler then played Last Post, the moving tribute to those that have died in wartime. The many uniformed veterans, including those who served in Burma during World War 2, saluted as a sign of respect. This was followed by the customary two minutes silence.
Poppy wreaths were then laid at the war memorial led by HE Mr. Quinton Quayle, British Ambassador and followed by representatives from military organizations, embassies, societies and schools. Amelia and Punnat represented the school with dignity and maturity as they laid the Saint John’s wreath alongside the many others. They were commended by several veterans afterwards who remarked upon how much it meant to see school children showing such respect.
