Romeo and Julia
9th October-12th November
Things are really moving now as we enter the final weeks of rehearsal for the big production. With as many as four rehearsals a week for some of the cast, some of them are probably murmuring Shakespeare’s lines in their sleep and dreaming to a Beatles’ soundtrack. I know I am…
Recent highlights have included a rip-roaring rendition of Birthday giving the boys in the band the opportunity to showcase what they can do. |

Similarly, their version of I’m Down will bring the house down especially with Sukrit’s electrifying performance as Mercury beginning to take hold. Sukrit has become Mercury now. It’s official. The Capole gang are having a lot of fun in their scenes at the moment mimicking the nurse played with massive comedy by Goofy and echoing Mercury’s over-the-top jokes in Act 2 scene 1. That’s the big scene for us. Comedy is over. It’s time for tragedy.
The star-crossed lovers themselves are doing well.
Pro (Romeo) particularly impressed me with his performance of Mother Nature’s Son in a recent rehearsal. He sang and played acoustic guitar in the scene with skill and confidence. Very cool. Mew’s (Julia) vocals in Julia are lovely and her famous lines in the balcony scene are worth the entrance fee alone. |
Meanwhile Ms. Fretche has been working hard on the dancing with the chorus. It’s all starting to come together. In our rehearsal of Act 1 on Monday, I really enjoyed watching the cast “strutting their stuff” in the big scenes. Not bad, especially considering we have lots of rehearsal left until the big opening night on December 8th.
Behind the scenes, Christine and the PTA have been busily constructing the set and props. Brilliant work is being done there, as always, as seen in recent productions. |

To close, I’ve decided to give out a special actor of the week award and, in typical school style, announce that the top spot will have to be shared. The first recipients of this prestigious accolade are Pacharee for her growing role as the Narrator and Ukrid for being an increasingly believable father figure to Julia. Not bad considering he’s only in Year 8! I would like to add an award here for Mr Bennett himself for his over-exaggerated, highly entertaining acting lessons, on this occasion specifically, how to act like a cat!!(Ed.) |
Nick Bennett.
