Saint John's International School Bangkok, Thailand

Science

Ethos:
The study of Science fires students’ curiosity about phenomena in the world around them and offers opportunities to find explanations. Experimentation and modeling are used to develop and evaluate explanations, encouraging critical and creative thought. Students will learn how knowledge and understanding in Science are rooted in evidence and discover how scientific ideas contribute to technological change.

At St. John’s we encourage the use of independent thinking and help our students to explore the world around them. Our aim is to nurture and enhance our students’ inherent curiosity about the World.

The Department:
We have 3 separate purpose built laboratories, a general teaching room and a fully equipped preparatory area. All laboratories have PC’s linked to an LCD projector, allowing access to the school network and the internet. The science team is made up of friendly, dedicated, highly qualified and experienced individuals, all of whom come from a range of scientific and educational backgrounds.

We have specialist teachers for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as highly trained technical support staff.

The Curriculum:
In Years 7 through to 9, students follow the English National Curriculum for Science and throughout this Key Stage the National Curriculum is used as a framework to be improved upon and made more relevant to students living in Thailand. Students are also offered the chance to take part in a Science trip in each year of study, designed to build on their existing knowledge and to stimulate a wider interest in the scientific world.

With progression into Year 10, all students must study one, two or three of the separate sciences, with the more able choosing to do all three sciences as separate subjects (3 independent IGCSE grades). Our students sit IGCSE exams which are more academically challenging than the UK GSCE courses on offer and should better prepare students for the challenge of A Levels. IGCSE examinations are taken at the end of Year 11 and the average pass rate of grades A*- C is above 80%.
