Saint John's International School Bangkok, Thailand

Primary Year6

Welcome to Year 6

Our work during the year responds to the needs of the children of different experiences and abilities and follows closely the National Curriculum Frameworks.

In Year 6 we believe in providing many exciting opportunities with a practical ‘hands on’ approach to teaching and learning. We also like to work closely with the Secondary School to prepare the children for year 7, using the labs, workshops and teachers whenever possible.

Some of the most enjoyable practical activities take place on our residential trip to Kanchanaburi in December. The children have agreed that visiting the dam, the River Kwai and the war museums, plus carrying out experiments at Erawan waterfall, have been memorable and interesting experiences...and of course a lot of fun.

We also like to learn about where we live, going on trips to local places of interest like the Bangkok Art Museum and Koh Kret.

English and ICT are taught throughout the school day in all subject areas and we use them to enrich the children’s understanding of the subjects and increase their vocabulary as much as possible.

In the third term our children sit the NCT tests from England in English and Mathematics.

Literacy

The children get to experience many different types of literature, including, poetry, biographies, newspapers, stories and factual books.

Numeracy

At St John’s we believe in making Numeracy fun! As a result the children use a wide range of resources such as games and puzzles, investigations, practical activities and ICT alongside the National Numeracy Strategy. The children are also prepared for the National Curriculum tests and ensure they practice a variety of skills, including mental maths skills.

Science

In Science the children have many opportunities to carry out practical investigations and experiments to develop practical skills and consolidate new scientific concepts. The topics we cover include ‘Interdependence and Adaption’, ‘Dissolving’, ‘Different Changes’, ‘Seeing Things’, ‘Forces in Action’, ‘Changing circuits’ and ‘Micro-organisms’.

History

Whilst studying the topic, ‘Children in Wartime’ the children look at the effects of the Second World War on Thailand and Asia. They visit Kanchanaburi and learn about the allied POWs who built the Thai-Burma railway and the bridge over the River Kwai. We look at the lives of children affected by war such as Anne Frank and Sadako.

Geography

Once again, the children take the practical approach so when studying the topic, ‘Rivers’ we get out of Bangkok and onto a field study at Erawan waterfall in Kanchanaburi. The river processes such as erosion and deposition are much easier to see and understand.

Information & Communication Technology

The children develop their computer skills during year 6 using Microsoft Power point, Excel, Publisher and the internet to produce spreadsheets and presentations for a variety of audiences and purposes.

Art &Design / Design Technology

During the year we do a range of practical activities from designing and constructing to food technology all using a variety of materials and skills.

Personal, Social and Health Education

As for all other classes, PSHE lessons follow a weekly theme using the SEAL scheme of work. Each week the children will discuss and work on a weekly theme such as ‘New beginnings’, ‘Say no to bullying’ and ‘Relationships’.

Physical Education

By the end of Key Stage 2, the children will have experienced a variety of activities and have developed their understanding, skills and knowledge to a point where they are able evaluate their own and others level of performance. These areas include athletics, football, gymnastics, health-related fitness, swimming and mini games. The children are taught to select, use and adapt strategies, tactics and compositional ideas for individual and team activities and to understand the way physical activities improve general health and how exercise affects the body.
